Life as a Cubic Apprentice: Adam Grayson
Mar 07, 2019

Celebrating National Apprentice Week

Adam began his apprenticeship at the beginning of September 2017, and has since completed and moved on to a full-time role within Cubic.

What led you to join the apprentice scheme at Cubic? I previously did an apprenticeship with another company, and at the end of it I wasn’t happy with the workspace so I left, and went back to VQ to look at my options. They mentioned Cubic was looking for a Software Support Consultant. Having reviewed the application and job role I went ahead with it and within a few weeks started work after successfully completing two interviews with Cubic.

What were your expectations when you started the scheme? What were you hoping to learn? I left school with only a few GCSEs; school was never my thing and I found it very hard - my dad was the one who suggested apprenticeships to me. I used VQ as they were local and they had a role as a web designer at the time with a company in Harrogate (before Cubic). My goal was to just gain workplace experience and some qualifications from doing the apprenticeship, helping me long term.

Did you have any reservations about becoming an apprentice? Would you now recommend it to others? Becoming an apprentice was an easy and logical decision for me - I don’t regret doing it, it’s led me to the role I’m in now, which is where I’ve wanted to be.

What has been your most memorable experience so far? Or your biggest learning?
Going from working in a dead silent environment in a small office, to somewhere where you’re told to ask questions , where chatting and socialising were a big part of the environment, where you constantly feel like you can turn to anyone for advice , to know that if you make a mistake it’s not the end of the world because it happens, was amazing. The biggest thing was the change of environment and how much of a difference it made to me as a person . I’ve almost completely shifted the social anxiety I’ve always had, and to be totally honest that’s only happened because of Cubic’s approach to things.

What kind of things have you been working on while at Cubic? Initially it was only going to be the support side of things (answering the phone to clients and resolving support tickets). However, with my computer and general IT knowledge, I fell into many other areas too, from managing the office IT to assisting with the setup and launch of new Azure services with Will, the IT & infrastructure Manager.

Has the scheme allowed you to develop your skills and improve your knowledge of the industry? Heavily. My knowledge has grown significantly, from both the job itself and the wide range of courses and additional qualifications I gained from doing the apprenticeship.

What are you hoping to do next? Weirdly completely away from IT - I recently got back into photography which re-sparked my interests in cinematography. My hope one day is to move into a more professional environment with this, however, if this does happen it won’t be for a few years. I still don’t quite know exactly where I would like to go in my career, however I’m more than happy in my current position at Cubic for the foreseeable future. Can you see yourself working at Cubic Interactive?
